Before we jump into our font pairings, you should know what categories of fonts are out there. Two main types are serif fonts and sans-serif fonts. There are also display/decorative, traditional and handwritten script, slab-serif, and monospaced fonts.
Serif Typeface
In typography, a serif is an extra small line or stroke attached to the end of a letter within a font or family of fonts. Serifed fonts are mainly used for body text because they are more comfortable to read than sans-serif fonts in print. That is why they are used in books and magazines.
Some popular fonts are Times New Roman, Bodoni, Libre Baskerville, and Playfair Display.

Sans-Serif Typeface
Sans-serif fonts tend to have a more consistent thickness than serif fonts and no extra stroke or feet at the ends of the letters. They are often used to reflect simplicity, modernity, and minimalism. Sans-serif fonts have become the most used for the display of text on websites and apps.
Some popular fonts are Futura PT, Proxima Nova, Brandon Grotesque, and Montserrat.
Slab-Serif Typeface
A slab serif fonts are a type of serif fonts characterized by thick, block-like serifs. Serif strokes may be either blunt and angular or rounded. Slab serifs are a vast and varied category. Some have a geometric design with minimal variation in stroke width like a sans-serif fonts with added serifs. Others have a structure more like most other serif fonts, though with more substantial and more obvious serifs.
Display-oriented slab serifs are usually very bold, to grab the reader’s attention on a poster. However, slab serifs that are oriented towards legibility at small sizes show a lot less personality. Slab serif fonts were also used in typewriters.
Some popular fonts are Courier, Rockwell, Claredon, and Museo Slab.

Script Typeface
Script typefaces are the varied and often fluid strokes created by handwriting. They are generally used for display or trade printing.
Script typefaces are either highly regular formal types similar to cursive writing or looser, more casual scripts. Many modern script fonts emulate the styles of hand lettering from different historical periods.
Script fonts tend to have low legibility; therefore, you should use them carefully. You should never use script typefaces for body text for the same reason – they are hard to read. They are suitable for personal logo designs or accent font in other graphics.
Some examples of fonts are Allura, Pacifico, Lust Script, and Al Fresco.
Decorative and Display Typeface
A decorative and display typefaces are intended for use at large sizes for headings, rather than for body text. These fonts will often have more eccentric and variable designs than the simple, relatively restrained typefaces generally used for body text. These fonts are very quirky and have a lot of personality to them.
Several font types are particularly associated with display settings, such as slab serif, script font, reverse-contrast, and, to a lesser extent, sans serif.
Some examples of fonts are Gobold CUTS, Juniper Std, Bauhaus 93, and Goudy Stout.
